- JIFF Hands Out Awards As 18th Edition Comes to a Close
Brazilian film Rifle from director Davi Pretto was crowned the Grand Prize winner in the International Competition of this year’s 18th edition of the Jeonju International Film Festival (JIFF) on May 3rd. Topping the Korean Competition was LIM Tea-gue’s The Seeds of Violence, while BAE Kyung-heon’s Alone Together took the Grand Prize in the Korean Competition for Shorts.Beyond Rifle, which deals with land developers looking to take advantage of small rural town in Southern Brazil, other prize winners in the international section included Damien MANIVEL’s The Park which earned the Woosuk Award, and Maysaloun HAMOUD’s In Between and Eduardo WILLIAMS's The Human Surge which shared the Special Jury Prize.In addition to its Grand Prize win, The Seeds of Violence, which concerns violence in the military, also picked up the CGV Arthouse Award Distribution Support Prize. Meanwhile the CGV Arthouse Award Upcoming Project Prize went to LEE Seung-won’s Happy Bus Day, which debuted last month at the Hong Kong International Film Festival.In other Korean film prizes, the NETPAC Award for best Korean feature film was earned by KIM Hee-chul’s The Painter's View, the Documentary Award went to PARK Moon-chil’s Blue Butterfly Effect, KO Bong-soo’s Loser’s Adventure went home with the Daemyung Culture Wave Award and HWANG Kyu-il’s Saem was the winner of the UNION INVESTMENT PARTNERS Award for best debut film.In the local shorts category, CHAE Eui-seok’s Bomdong picked up the Special Jury Prize while KIM Yong-sam’s Hye-Young was awarded the Best Director Prize.The 18th Jeonju International Film Festival closed on May 6th with a screening of YAGUCHI Shinobu’s Survival Family.
