  • PARK Chan-wook Returns to Cannes for Jury Duty
  • by Pierce Conran /  Apr 27, 2017
  • 4th Trip to the Croisette for Korean Auteur

After taking part in the Cannes Film Festival’s international competition for a third time last year, renowned Korean director PARK Chan-wook will return to the Croisette next month as a member of the international jury of the festival’s 70th edition.

Director PARK earned the Grand Prix from Cannes with Old Boy in 2004 and also picked up a Jury Prize in 2009 for Thirst. Last year he competed with The Handmaiden. The director is the fourth Korean film industry professional to sit on the international jury, following director SHIN Sang-ok in 1994, director LEE Chang-dong in 2009 and actress JEON Do-yeon in 2014.

PARK’s co-jurors include actors Will Smith, Jessica Chastain, FAN Bingbing and Agnès Jaoui, directors Paolo Sorrentino and Maren Ade, and composer Gabriel Yared, as well as jury president Pedro Almodóvar.

This year’s Competition section features two works from Korea, including the Netflix title Okja from director BONG Joon-ho, whose last work Snowpiercer (2013) was produced by PARK, and Hong Sangsoo’s latest film The Day After, which features PARK’s The Handmaiden star KIM Min-hee in a leading role.

Director Hong is also included in the Special Screenings section with Claire’s Camera, while two Korean titles are featured among the Midnight Screenings, JUNG Byung-gil’s The Villainess and BYUN Sung-hyun’s The Merciless.
