Company’s 2nd Japanese Co-Production Directed by MIIKE Takashi
In addition to their new crime thriller
The Merciless from director
BYUN Sung-hyun, which was invited to the Midnight Screenings section, top Korean studio
CJ Entertainment is also involved with another film that has been invited to next month’s 70th Cannes Film Festival.
The company was involved with MIIKE Takashi’s
Blade of the Immortal, which is being featured in an Out of Competition slot in Cannes’ main lineup. CJ co-produced the film from its early stages, working for the second time on a Japanese project following their
Miss Granny (2014) adaptation
Sing My Life last year.
Blade of the Immortal is based on a 1993 manga from author SAMURA Hiroaki, which sold in excess of seven mission copies over a 20 year period. The film is about an immortal samurai who protects a young girl pursuing a vendetta. Starring in the project are KIMURA Takuya and SUGISAKI Hana.
Prolific filmmaker MIIKE has participated at Cannes several times, with works such as Shield of Straw (2013) and Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai (2011)
Ahead of its Cannes festival bow,
Blade of the Immortal will go on domestic release in Japan on April 29th. CJ is also on board to distribute the film in several markets across Asia, including Korea, China, Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand, most of which are markets where the company’s exhibition subsidiary
CGV Cinemas operates multiplexes. CJ is also actively involved in producing local content in those nations, including several versions of their hit
Miss Granny.
