  • by Pierce Conran /  Apr 13, 2017
  • Audience Award Goes to LUCK-KEY in Italy

The 15th Florence Korea Film Fest wound to a close on April 6th with a screening of closing film THE NET by veteran indie director KIM Ki-duk. In addition to the screening, the festival annual awards were handed out. These included the Jury Award, which was unanimously given to NA Hong-jin’s THE WAILING, and the Audience Award, sponsored by Asiana Airline, which was picked up by the comedy LUCK-KEY from director LEE Gae-byok

The second place audience prize went to LEE Joon-ik’s Colonial Era biopic DONGJU; The Portrait of A Poet, and the third place prize was shared by KIM Seong-hun’s Tunnel and YEON Sang-ho’s TRAIN TO BUSAN.

THE WAILING, the third work from director NA following The Chaser (2008) and The Yellow Sea (2010), debuted Out of Competition at the Cannes Film Festival and was a major critical and commercial hit in Korea, accruing 6.88 million viewers (USD 49.5 million). The body swap action-comedy LUCK-KEY, with YOO Hae-jin and LEE Joon, was an unexpected success last year, drawing a stellar 6.96 million viewers (USD 50.04 million) to cinemas. The film was adapted from the Japanese title Key of Life (2012).

This year’s Florence Korea Film Fest opened with KIM Jee-woon’s The Age of Shadows and also featured a special retrospective and masterclass on director PARK Chan-wook.
