- 18th Jeonju Film Festival to Screen 211 Films from April 27

This year the Jeonju International Film Festival (JIFF) will return for its 18th edition on April 27th and run through to May 6th. The full program will be unveiled later this month and will include some 211 titles from 45 countries, split into the International and Korean Competitions, as well as several sidebars.The motto for this year’s edition will be ‘an outlet of expression in film’ and the design for the 18th JIFF features imagery symbolizing the movement of ‘light’ and ‘butterfly’. The festival’s committee wrote in a statement that “We positioned the light that comes in from different angles and the butterfly in front. This symbolizes the slogan of JIFF which has supported the freedom of expression in film and arts without being swayed by external pressure.”Earlier this month, the festival announced the 19 finalists for its Korean Competition for Shorts, which include two Korean Academy of Film Arts (KAFA) shorts, BAE Kyung-heon’s Alone Together and HAN Ka-ram’s Tombstone Refugee. The selection jury stated that "Unlike the last few years, when the worries about school violence and difficulty in the job market were the majority, there were many films about home this year. In the past decade, many short films have been focused on the changes of physical space by redevelopment.”Also announced is the sidebar program ‘Michael Winterbottom: The Filmmaker across the Boundaries’, which will feature 15 films by the acclaimed British filmmaker as well as a masterclass.
