Korean Festival Brings Together Works of ‘Creative Cities’
The 18th edition of the Independent Film Festival BUSAN was held from November 18th to 21st. The festival, which has been running since 1999, screened 56 films highlighting new talents from within Korea and all around the world at the famous
Busan Cinema Center as well as other venues around the city.
This year’s event was featured on UNESCO’s Creative Cities Network website. Part of the festival’s program is dedicated to ‘Inter-City’ films, works which were made in other UNESCO Creative Cities. The section has been active since 2014 and this year screened works from Bradford (UK), Galway (Ireland) and Sofia (Bulgaria). UNESCO designates the Creative Cities as places which can promote regional development and cultural diversity based on their city's cultural assets and creativity.
Other sections of the festival’s lineup included ‘Deep Focus’, ‘In-Between’, ‘Made in Busan Competition’, ‘Busan’s Feature-length Films’ and ‘Local Independent Films’.
The festival’s Grand Prize went to
KIM Na-young’s
In the Dust of Time. Meanwhile, the year’s Propose Acting Prizes went to LEE Sang-hyun in
Cabin and CHOI Yoo-jin from
In the Dust of Time.
Cabin, which was also directed by LEE Sang-hyun, was the recipient of the festival’s technical award while KIM Min-gun’s
Mother’s Scenic House was given the Jury’s Special Prize.
