  • LA Film Critics Give THE HANDMAIDEN Best Foreign Film Prize
  • by Pierce Conran /  Dec 06, 2016
  • RYU Seong-hee Awarded for Best Production Design

PARK Chan-wook’s new work The Handmaiden is gaining steam on the American awards circuit after receiving two prizes at the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards. The period thriller was triumphant in the Foreign-Language Film category and also came away with an award for Best Production Design, which went to RYU Seong-hee.

Following its competition bow at the Cannes Film Festival, The Handmaiden was a hit in its native Korea, welcoming 4.29 million viewers (USD 30.07 million), and has screened all around the world, winning several prizes, including a Grand Audience Award at the Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival.

Acclaimed production designer RYU, who has worked on several PARK films in the past, including Old Boy (2003) and Thirst (2009), as well as other modern Korean classics such as BONG Joon-ho’s Memories Of Murder (2003) and KIM Jee-woon’s A Bittersweet Life (2005), has drawn high praise for her production design work on The Handmaiden. Earlier this year she won the Vulcan Award for Technical Achievement at Cannes and recently picked up the Best Production Design Award from the Blue Dragon Awards.

Though it has been shortlisted or nominated by several other awards groups, The Handmaiden is ineligible to compete in the foreign language category of next year’s Academy Awards, as the official Korean selection this year is KIM Jee-woon’s The Age of Shadows. However, it is possible for the film to be recognized in other categories, including production design and cinematography.
