IM Kwon-taek, often called the godfather of Korean cinema, has been honoured at the International Film Festival of India in Goa, where he was bestowed their Lifetime Achievement Award. He received the prize during the opening festivities of this year’s 47th edition.

IM is among the three most prolific Korean filmmakers of all time, having made his 102nd feature Revivre (2015). His works have screened all around the world, with Chihwaseon winning him the Best Director award from the Cannes Film Festival in 2002, The Surrogate Womb winning Best Actress for current Busan International Film Festival director KANG Soo-yeon at the Venice International Film Festival in 1987 and his 1993 classic Seopyeonje often featuring near the top of best of Korean cinema lists.

After Goa governor Mridula Sinha gave him the prize at the ceremony, IM made some brief remarks, alluding to how he felt he’d made immature films at the beginning of his career. Earlier at a press conference, the octogenarian filmmaker stated that he believed he had yet to make a full-fledged masterpiece.

IM also reserved some kind works for Indian cinema, when he mentioned his appreciation for the works of actor Shah Rukh Khan, including 3 Idiots (2009), and India-set Danny Boyle’s Academy Awards winner Slumdog Millionaire (2008).

Beyond IM’s award, Korean films are receiving a special focus at Goa this year, with a program that features 18 current works spanning an array of genres. The festival runs from the 20th to the 28th of November.
