  • AREUM and SINGING WITH ANGRY BIRD Invited to IDFA
  • by Pierce Conran /  Oct 24, 2016
  • New Korean Non-Fiction Works Screen in Amsterdam

A pair of new Korean non-fiction works have been invited to screen at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA), the most prestigious non-fiction film event in the world. Screening in the IDFA Competition for First Appearance will be PARKKANG A-reum’s self-titled work Areum, while JEE Hye-won’s Singing with Angry Bird will be featured in the Panorama section.

PARKKANG’s personal work Areum, one of 15 films in the First Appearance competitive section, will focus on her own tribulations in the dating market following a string of failed blind dates. The film is also among ten works at IDFA which will be up for the Alliance of Women Film Journalists’ EDA Award, which is worth EUR 2,500. The prize is bestowed to the best documentary directed by a woman.

Singing with Angry Bird concerns a Korean opera singer who begins a children’s choir in a slum in an Indian city. Hoping to instigate real change in the children’s lives he seeks to involve their parents in his project. Singing with Angry Bird was invited back to screen at IDFA after taking part in the event’s forum section as a project last year.

The last time a Korean documentary picked up a prize at IDFA was in 2011, when YI Seung-jun’s Planet of Snail earned the Best Feature-Length Documentary Award.
