24 Participants Selected from 16 Countries
Celebrated Malaysian filmmaker TSAI Ming-liang, who works in Taiwan, has been tapped to serve as the dean of this year’s Asian Film Academy, which will kick off on September 29th and subsequently run concurrently with the
Busan International Film Festival, wrapping up on October 16th.
A frequent guest at BIFF in the past, TSAI is known for his contributions to Taiwan’s 2nd New Wave and has directed such critically acclaimed titles as Golden Lion winner Vive L’Amour (1994), Silver Bear winner The River (1997) and Venice Grand Jury Prize winner Stray Dogs (2013). In 2010, TSAI was honored with the Asian Filmmaker of the Year Award in Busan.
Other faculty that will serve at this year’s AFA include directing mentor Vimukthi Jayasundara of Sri Lanka, who made Cannes Camera d’or winner The Forsaken Land (2005) among others, and cinematography mentor Bogumil Godfrejow of Poland, known for his work with director Hans Christian Schmid.
During the last 11 years, AFA has shaped 265 fellows from 29 countries in their early film careers. This year, 24 young filmmakers from 16 countries were selected from 338 applicants from 31 countries. These include AFA’s first participant from Bhutan. The selected candidates will take part in several workshops in Busan and will also be split into two groups which will each be tasked with completing a short film which will be screened at the end of the 21st edition of BIFF.
