  • HA Ji-won Hops on to John WOO’s MANHUNT

  • Korean Actress to Act for HK Legend

Following months of speculation, actress HA Ji-won confirmed last week that she will indeed be appearing in the new film by veteran Hong Kong filmmaker John WOO. The performer made the announcement during a dinner hosted by HK production and distribution company Media Asia during the ongoing Shanghai International Film Festival.

In her words: “It‘s like a dream come true to be involved in a project by Woo, who had all of our admiration when we were growing up.” HA is a major star in Korea who has headlined films such as Haeundae (2009) and As One (2012), as well as action titles including The Duelist (2005), Sector 7 (2011) and The Huntresses (2014). She most recently appeared in HA Jung-woo’s Chronicle of a Blood Merchant last year and will soon be seen opposite CHEN Bolin in the mystery romcom Life Risking Romance.

Manhunt, which is based on a 1976 Japanese film of the same name, will mostly be shot in Osaka in Japan and made on a budget of USD 30 million. The story features a detective hunting down a criminal who has been framed for theft, rape and murder. HA will take on the role of a female assassin in the film, which will co-star FUKUYAMA Masaharu, ZHANG Hanyu and Stephy Qi WEI.

Director of classic HK fare such as The Killer (1989) and Hard Boiled (1992), John WOO forged a career in Hollywood, which included hits such as Face/Off (1997), before returning East and making blockbuster Chinese films such as the Red Cliff films (2008/09).
