  • THE WORLD OF US and DONGJU to Bookend Toronto Korean Film Festival
  • by Pierce Conran /  Jun 07, 2016
  • 11 Features for 5th Edition of Canadian Fest

The Toronto Korean Film Festival is gearing up for its fifth festival, which will take place from June 17th to 24th. The festival will open with YOON Ga-eun’s The World of Us and close with LEE Joon-ik’s DONGJU; The Portrait of A Poet.

YOON’s debut feature, a tale of elementary girls navigating the world of adults, had its world premiere earlier this year at the Berlin International Film Festival and went on to play at the Udine Far East Film Festival and the TIFF Kids International Film Festival.

LEE’s black and white drama DONGJU; The Portrait of A Poet focuses on the life of a poet during the Japanese Colonial Era and was written and produced by indie filmmaker SHIN Yeon-shick, becoming a massive low-budget hit in Korea earlier this year.

Also on deck for this year’s edition are the documentaries A Crybaby Boxing Club, Troublers and I Am Sunmu, the Jeonju Cinema Project Snow Paths, O Muel’s arthouse tale Eyelids, KIM Ki-duk’s Korea-Japan co-production Stop, the chamber genre piece Karaoke Crazies and the legal thriller The Unfair.

The festival will also feature 18 short films which will be spread over two different programs, a competition, and a Canadian-Korean co-production showcase.
