On May 5th, the Jeonju International Film Festival handed out the awards for its 17th edition. Taking the Grand Prize in the International Competition was Elite Zexer’s Sand Storm from Israel, while LEE Hyun-ju’s Our Love Story and KO Bong-soo’s DELTA BOYS shared top honors in the Korean Competition. LEE Ji-won’s Summer Night took home the award for Best Korean Short Film.

Beyond Sand Storm, the International Competition jury also handed a Best Picture Prize for Ted Fendt’s Short Stay and a Special Jury Prize for Emir Baigazin’s The Wounded Angel. A Special Mention was also reserved for Mauro Herce’s Dead Slow Ahead.

In the Korean Competition, the Grand Prize was shared between the queer drama Our Love Story, a feature production of the Korean Academy of Film Arts (KAFA) and DELTA BOYS, a comedy about four young men who form a quartet, which also won the CGV ARTHOUSE Upcoming Project Support Prize. KO Hee-young received a Special Mention and the CGV ARTHOUSE Distribution Support Prize for her Jeju diver documentary Breathing Underwater. Meanwhile, CHOI Seung-ho’s Spy Nation, a documentary about Korea’s National Intelligence Service, won the Netpac Award for Best Asian Film as well as the festival’s inaugural Best Documentary Prize.

In the Korean Shorts Competition, in addition to Summer Night’s Grand Prize win, PAIK Jongkwan took home the Best Director Prize for Cyclical Night while the Special Jury Prize went to KIM Kang-min’s Deer Flower, which debuted at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year.
