A Lunar New Year hit directed by LEE Il-hyung (marking his feature directorial debut), A Violent Prosecutor combined the box office draws HWANG Jung-min (Veteran, 2015) and GANG Dong-won (The Priests, 2015) to score a major success during the holidays, amassing just shy of 10 million viewers (USD 66.51 million). It sold to distribution outfits Twin (Japan), Lemon Tree (China), Movie Cloud (Taiwan), MVP Viva (the Philippines) and Emphasis (worldwide in-flight rights). The title was already released by Dreamwest Pictures in the US and Australia last month.
In the film, HWANG plays a disgraced prosecutor who is framed for murder and enlists the help of a smalltime criminal (GANG) to uncover the truth behind his confinement.
The latest melodrama from acclaimed director LEE Yoon-ki, A Man and A Woman features JEON Do-yeon (The Shameless, 2015) and GONG Yoo (The Suspect, 2013) as two married people who meet in Finland and begin an illicit affair. Showbox closed deals for the film with Klockworx (Japan), AV-Jet (Taiwan), MVP Viva (the Philippines) and Emphasis (worldwide in-flight rights).
Director LEE, whose work has featured prominently on the international festival circuit in the past, particularly the Berlin International Film Festival, and JEON previously collaborated on My Dear Enemy (2008).
