  • SPIRITS’ HOMECOMING Books Stateside Release
  • by Pierce Conran /  Mar 10, 2016
  • Comfort Women Drama Scores VOD Window in North America, UK

Spirits' Homecoming, the low-budget Korean drama about comfort women during the Japanese Colonial Era, has secured a quick US release following its stellar performance at the local box office. Per North American distributor WOW Pictures, the film will hit theatres in Los Angeles (CGV Cinema) and Dallas (Cine Oasis) on Friday (March 11th).

The film will also be made available in the United States, Canada and England through KORTV on Apple TV and Amazon TV. International sales agent M-Line Distribution is also weighing the possibility of releasing the film in further territories, such as France, Germany, Australia and Taiwan.

Directed by CHO Jung-rae and financed largely through a crowd-funding effort, following a lengthy development process that saw it encounter investment struggles for well over a decade, Spirits' Homecoming tells the story of young Korean girls who are separated from their families during World War II and forced to work in brothels servicing the Japanese military. Following real events, CHO wrote the screenplay based on survivors’ testimonies. CHO previously helmed the drama Duresori : The Voice of the East (2012) and last year’s documentary WONDERS.

Spirits' Homecoming has made huge strides in the Korean market, currently topping the box office chart following two weekends spent at number one. To date, the film has accrued 2.8 million admissions (USD 17.61 million).
