  • STEEL FLOWER Wins Marrakesh Jury Prize in Split Decision
  • by Pierce Conran /  Dec 15, 2015
  • PARK Suk-young Drama Competes in Morocco
In an intriguing split decision, PARK Suk-young’s new indie drama Steel Flower, which debuted back in October at the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), received a Special Jury Prize, along with all of its co-competitors at the Marrakech International Film Festival. However, the Francis Ford Coppola-led jury reserved to top Golden Star Prize for Jean Bou CHAAYA’s Very Big Shot from Lebanon.
The Godfather (1972) director Coppola explained that the decision (which was not unanimous one among the jury) came from his “love of all cinema”. He explained that "I realized any true cinema originating from pure motives is beautiful. It’s so hard to make a film, doing it requires labor for years under the most difficult circumstances and against hopeless odds… Yes, ladies and gentleman, this year’s jury prize is for cinema itself.”
Steel Flower features JEONG Ha-dam as a penniless young girl who moves to Busan in the hopes of finding work, only to be rebuffed at every turn. The film already picked up the Grand Prize and Independent Star Award from the Seoul Independent Film Festival (SIFF) earlier this month. The film was also one of the recipients of the Asian Cinema Fund (ACF) Post-Production Fund this year.
PARK Suk-young previously directed Wild Flowers, once again featuring JEONG, which debuted at BIFF last year and also screened at SIFF, as well as the Beijing International Film Festival and Black Movie - Geneva Independent Film Festival.
