CGV Seeks 10,000 Screens Worldwide by 2020
CJ CGV takes a leap to be a global cinema chain. The company held the Film Industry Media Forum at CGV CHEONGDAM CINECITY, Seoul on November 18th, and announced this year’s global outcomes and 2020 vision.
CEO SEO Jung said that the company opened 100th global theater, CGV Chengdu Longhu Jinnan in China on October 23rd. It is ten years after its first global theater in Shanghai in 2006. Estimated 130 million moviegoers visited CGV cinema chains worldwide this year. The company is currently operating 57 cinemas in China, 27 in Vietnam, 16 in Indonesia, 4 in Myanmar and 1 in US.
CJ CGV is coming forward to more aggressive expansion by opening its 100th theater. The firm aims to increase to 118 cinemas outside Korea. At this rate, the number of theaters outside is expected to exceed the ones of inside. The company has grown rapidly in two years from 49 theaters in 2013. Moreover, it is targeting 10,000 screens worldwide by the year 2020.
CJ CGV said its successful key was “Cultureplex” which provides both movies and life style. Actually CGV Beijing Yi Di Gang is called “Little CJ Town” because it is a complex cultural space with cinema and restaurants. New screens like 4DX and screen X which can be afforded only in CGV attract audiences to its theaters.
CJ’s global cinemas are doing well abroad and it became a new bridgehead for local movies to enter overseas markets. Korean movies which had been shown only one or two a year in Vietnamese and Indonesian theaters, increased to more than ten films after CJ’s international business.
Moreover, the company is hosting Korean film festivals in its advanced countries every year. According to its plan, moviegoers will be able to watch Korean films on 10,000 screens worldwide in 2020.
