  • Jake Gyllenhaal and More Line Up for BONG Joon-ho
  • by Pierce Conran /  Oct 07, 2015
  • Paul Dano, Kelly Macdonald and Bill Nighy Also Considering OKJA

BONG Joon-ho’s next project Okja, an English and Korean language monster movie, is beginning to take shape with some big names coming on board to join the cast. Hollywood stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Paul Dano, Kelly Macdonald and Bill Nighy are all in discussions to join previously announced and already confirmed Tilda Swinton, one of BONG’s stars in Snowpiercer (2013), in the project which will begin shooting early next year.

Okja will follow a young Korean girl from the countryside who journeys between Korea and the United States, specifically New York, but nothing else is known about the story yet, save that the dialogue will alternate between English and Korean. The project is being made by Lewis Pictures, with Haemoo producer Lewis KIM handling producing duties.

Currently in the mountaineering drama Everest, Gyllenhaal is coming off of a strong run of credits, which include Prisoners (2013), Enemy (2013) and Nightcrawler (2014). Known for his oddball turns in modern classics such as Paul Thomas Anderson’s There Will Be Blood (2007), Dano most recently impressed in Brian Wilson biopic Love & Mercy (2015). Scottish actress Macdonald has drawn acclaim for her work on HBO series Boardwalk Empire, while British thesp Nighy recently featured in Pride (2014) and The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2015). Swinton, who recently visited the Busan International Film Festival with her new film A Bigger Splash, recently drew acclaim for her turn as a vampire in Jim Jarmusch’s Only Lovers Left Alive (2013).

BONG’s last film Snowpiercer, which also featured a multi-national cast, grossed USD 86.76 million around the world and was hit on VOD in the United States.
