  • 11 Korean Films Bound for NYAFF
  • by Pierce Conran /  Jun 08, 2015
  • Myung Films Sidebar in New York

The New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF) revealed an eclectic lineup for its forthcoming 2015 edition late last week, which this year will feature 11 films from South Korea. A large chunk of that number will be devoted to past and present works of veteran Korean production company Myung Films, in a retro labeled ‘Pioneers and Women Behind the Camera in Korean Film’.

Among the Korean roster will be a pair of international festival premieres, for AHN Sang-hoon’s erotic period drama Empire of Lust and youth dramedy Twenty from LEE Byoung-heon, both of which were released domestically in March. Other major commercial films include YIM Soon-rye’s The Whistleblower and the period drama The Royal Tailor from LEE Won-suk.

Some popular indie fare is also among the ranks at NYAFF this year, including My Love, Don’t Cross that River, a documentary chronicling a 76-year marriage which became the most successful independent film of all time in Korea, and the Korean Academy of Film Arts (KAFA) graduation project Socialphobia, from debut filmmaker HONG Seok-jae.

The Myung Films section will present their two most recent films, BOO Ji-young’s social drama Cart, which debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival last year, and IM Kwon-taek’s acclaimed 102nd film Revivre, starring AHN Sung-ki. The program also includes three modern classics, KIM Ki-duk’s The Isle (2000), YIM Soon-rye’s Waikiki Brothers (2001) and IM Sang-soo’s The President’s Last Bang (2005).

Since NYAFF’s lineup still isn’t finalised we may yet see some more Korean films sneak before it kicks off on June 26th. This year’s 14th edition will conclude on July 11th.
