  • HOSANNA to Compete in Berlinale Shorts
  • by Pierce Conran /  Jan 14, 2015
  • NA Young-kil’s Short Debuted in Jeonju

The Berlin International Film Festival announced its competitive shorts program yesterday, which will comprise 27 films from 18 countries. Among those selected for this year’s 65th edition is NA Young-kil’s Hosanna.

NA’s film, which initially screened at last year’s Jeonju International Film Festival, tells the story of a boy with a special ability to heal people or even bring them back from the dead. However, as the cured patients return to their hard lives, they offer the boy only scorn. Director NA graduated from the Korea National University of Arts last year.

The last Korean work to win the Golden Bear for Best Short Film was Night Fishing, by brothers PARK Chan-wook and PARK Chan-kyong in 2011. That same year, YANG Hyo-joo’s Broken Night picked up the Silver Bear in the same category.

Hosanna is the second Korean film to be invited to Berlin so far this year, following Ode to My Father’s selection to the festival’s Panorama lineup. Beyond the Golden and Silver Bears, the film will also be eligible for best short film at the European Film Awards and the EUR 20,000 Audi Short Film Award, to be presented for the first time this year. The 65th edition of Berlinale, which will run over February 5th to 15th, will gradually reveal its full lineup throughout January.
