  • HONG Sangsoo Gets the Montgolfiere d’Or
     

    At the 36th Festival des 3 Continents, Hill of Freedom took home the top award. In the city of Nantes in Western France, the festival focuses on films form three continents: Africa, Latin America and Asia. Korea has had a consistent and strong presence at the festival starting with its first year, including recognition for major directors such as HONG Sangsoo, IM Kwon-taek, JANG Kun-jae and BAE Chang-ho and invitations for multiple works over the years, totalling approximately 60 films throughout its history.
     
    This year, the festival invited ZHANG Lu’s Gyeongju in addition to HONG Sangsoo’s Hill of Freedom. There were also Korean co-productions such as YU Lik-wai’s All Tomorrow’s Parties, and JIA Zhang-ke’s Plaisirs Inconnus. In total, there were a total of ten films in the International Competition section and 10 films in the Out of Competition section at the festival.
     
    On December 2nd, the festival announced its winners. HONG Sangsoo took the top award (the Montgolfiere d’Or) for Hill of Freedom. The Montgolfiere d’Argent and Prix du Public WIK/FIP went to Erol MINTAS’ Les chants de ma mere, a Special Mention went to NGUYEN HOANG Diep for Flapping in the Middle of Nowhere, and lastly the Prix du Jury Jeune went to Jenna CATO BASS’ Love the One You Love.  
     

    Hill of Freedom
    stars MOON So-ri, Kase Ryo and SEO Young-hwa. In it, a woman named Kwon, who goes on leave in an effort to revive her health, comes back home to find letters from her old flam, Mori. As she reads the letters she almost faints, accidently dropping them. In turn, the letters mix in chronology. The film follows the scripts from Mori as Kwon reads them. Hill of Freedom will be released in French theatres in the first half of 2015.
     
    The 36th Festival des 3 Continents opened on November 25th and closed December 2nd.
