  • AFI Fest Screens Korean Quartet
  • by Pierce Conran /  Nov 11, 2014
  • ALIVE, A HARD DAY, HAEMOO and MAN ON THE CHAIR in LA

A quartet of Korean films from four different corners of the Korean film sector are currently being presented at AFI Fest, the American Film Institute’s Film Festival which takes place in Los Angeles every year. Alive, A Hard Day, Haemoo and Man on the Chair were all invited to screen in different sections.

Following high profile selections at the Toronto, San Sebastian, Vancouver and Busan International Film Festivals, SHIM Sung-bo’s debut film Haemoo, a dark thriller that also boasts Bong Joon Ho as a co-writer and executive producer, is screening in the World Cinema program. The film was recently picked to be the official Korean representative for next year’s Academy Awards.

PARK Jung-bum’s sophomore feature, the austere epic Alive, will be featured in the New Auteurs section. Originally commissioned for the Jeonju International Film Festival, the film, which also stars the director, has gone on to screen at the Locarno, Toronto and Busan International Film Festivals.

On the back of strong reviews during its Director’s Fortnight Bow at the Cannes Film Festival, KIM Seong-hun’s blackly comic thriller A Hard Day became a substantial sleeper hit domestically as well as a popular festival invitee. It is currently on show in AFI’s Midnight lineup.

Last but not least, JEONG Dae-hee’s animated Man on the Chair is part of the Short Films program. The short debuted at Cannes and has picked up a number of accolades, including prizes from the Annecy and Hiroshima International Animation Film Festivals.

The AFI Fest kicked off last Thursday (November 6th) and will conclude this coming Thursday.
