  • Begin Again Takes Korean Box Office by Storm
  • by JUNG Yu-mi /  Sep 02, 2014
  • The film surpassed 810,000 in 19 days since its release, 26 days faster than Grand Budapest Hotel

A record was broken even earlier than expected. Begin Again topped Grand Budapest Hotel that created a new word ‘artbuster’ in the all-time box office rankings of diversity films. Begin Again’s box-office run is quite impressive as the film chalked up 810,252 admissions in total in 19 days since its opening. Begin Again crossed 700,000 admissions in 18 days since its release, 26 days faster than Grand Budapest Hotel that surpassed the point in 44 days since its release.  Begin Again is expected to continue to enjoy strong popularity for now.  Over the first weekend since its release, the film drew 63,756 viewers. In the next weekend, the film rose to 5th place from 9th place with the attraction of 151,901 viewers more than double the admissions of the first weekend. The film climbed to 4th by one notch, drawing 281,642 spectators last weekend, the third week since its release.  Like this, Begin Again became the king of artbusters as the film drew more audiences over time at box offices where it is common for a film to see ticket sales decrease over time.  The success of the small-budget film Begin Again is all the more impressive as the film has competed with the mega hit Roaring Currents and The Pirates that surpassed seven million admissions and the newly released blockbuster Into the StormBegin Again is the second film by director John CARNEY who made a worldwide sensation through the music film Once which nabbed the Best Song Prize at the 80th Academy Awards. Its touching music and good acting by Keira KNIGHTLEY and Mark RUFFALO are expected to enable the film to reign as the most successful diversity film at the Korean box office for the time being.
