  • 2015 Oscar Campaigns Kick off with SNOWPIERCER
  • by Pierce Conran /  Aug 28, 2014
  • Screeners Mailed Out to Academy Voters

The race to the Oscars is getting off to an earlier start than usual this year after TWC-Radius mailed out screeners of its Bong Joon Ho sci-fi opus Snowpiercer to Academy voters this week.

Snowpiercer, which was last summer’s biggest Korean hit (with 9.3 million admissions), premiered in North America as the opening film of the Los Angeles Film Festival in June before going on limited release on June 27th and VOD two weeks thereafter, where it has been a strong performer. Bong’s film is one of the most critically acclaimed films of 2014, maintaining a 95% score on review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes.

Looking to get a jump on the awards season, with Venice underway and the Telluride and Toronto Film Festivals just days away, TWC-Radius, the genre label of The Weinstein Company, is hoping to put forward Snowpiercer in various categories, such as Best Director (Bong Joon Ho), Screenplay (Bong Joon Ho and Kelly Masterson) and Supporting Actress (Tilda Swinton).

This is the first time that a Korean film has been given a major Academy Awards push. To this day, no Korean film has earned a single nomination for the Best Foreign Language Award or for any other category. Later this year, an official body will be brought together in Korea to select a local film as the official contender for the Oscar’s Foreign Language shortlist.

Last year, the first film to enter the fray was Mike Nichols’ Mud, which did so on September 21st, though that campaign failed to land any nominations. The Academy Awards, which are put on by the Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences (AMPAS), will take place on February 22nd next year.
