Korean Company Purchased Rights to Japanese Film
The Japanese animation You Are Umasou premiered quietly but attracted more viewers than expected with its serenely touching story through word of mouth in Korea in 2011. It has been announced that the sequel of the movie will be produced with 100% Korean capital. You Are Umasou is based on a Japanese picture book series which sold over 1.5 million copies. The fairytale was written by Tatsuya Miyanishi who is a renown writer in Japan. The film is about a carnivorous dinosaur that happens to come across an egg, and becomes a father to a graminivorous baby dinosaur. Different kinds of dinosaurs come together to form a family and live in harmony in the film. The film was peppered with comical and touching elements. You Are Umasou was unique because of its use of lyrical 2D cell animation method.
Media Castle, a Korean company, will produce the sequel as it took over the right of the Japanese animation and the right to produce its sequel. It is a rare collaboration for a Korean company to secure such rights from Japan. Media Castle selected a system to produce
You Are Umasou Movie 2 with 100% Korean capital and subcontract Japanese professional for production work unlike conventional joint production or joint investment methods.
Japanese professionals will develop characters and carry out continuity work, while Korean professionals will be in charge of the technical part such as colors and editing in an effort to enhance the quality of You Are Umasou Movie 2. At the moment, the continuity work has completed in Japan and Korean professionals are engaging in the following work. “We will produce an excellent animation out of the combination of the superb original work and Korea’s advanced technology,” said a spokesperson from Media Castle. You Are Umasou Movie 2 is planning to premiere in spring of 2015.
