Bela Tarr to Serve as Dean
Entering into its tenth edition, the Asian Film Academy (AFA) has revealed the 24 participants for its global filmmaking education project, which is staged by Dongseo University, the Busan Film Commission and the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF). Serving as the Dean of this year’s class is world-renowned Hungarian auteur Bela Tarr.
Since its launch in 2005 the AFA has seen its number of applicants steadily increase, recording a 52% year-on-year rise over 2013. Including former participants of events such as the Cannes Film Festival, competition for spots this year has also intensified. More people applied from China, in tandem with the rise of the Chinese film industry, and registration among female filmmakers has also gone up, with seven women among the final selection.
Fellows during the upcoming 10th edition will benefit from increased support in the form of seven technical assistants who will aid the participants during post-production. It was also announced earlier this year that AFA would this year be joining forces with the New York Film Academy and Full Sail University. This partnership will result in opportunities for two fellows to each take part in month-long Hi-Def Filmmaking Workshops in New York and Beijing. Meanwhile, Full Sail University instructors will visit Busan to conduct special lectures.
Satantango (1994) director Bela Tarr will act as Dean for AFA’s class of 2014 while Busan Film Commission Director OH Seok-geun will serve as Deputy Dean. Other distinguished guests who will serve on the faculty include Korean filmmaker SONG Il-gon and Polish cinematographer Ryszard Lenczewski. Together, the 24 participants will complete a pair of short films which will be presented at the upcoming 19th Busan International Film Festival. AFA will take place from September 25th to October 12th.
