  • Retro and Honorary Award for Korean Auteur

Korean auteur KIM Ki-duk is currently in Armenia for the 11th Golden Apricot Yerevan International Film Festival, which is staging a retrospective of his works. KIM was presented with the Parajanov Thaler Award during the opening ceremony on Sunday, July 13th.

Six of KIM’s films will be featured in the Armenian festival. The most recent of them is his Venice Golden Lion-winning Pieta (2012) while the earliest of his works on show is 2000’s The Isle (2003). Also included in the lineup are his Venice Silver Lion-winning 3-Iron (2004), the international hit Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter and Spring (2003), the military service-themed The Coast Guard (2002) and Address Unknown (2001).

The director, who is visiting Armenia for the first time, sang the traditional Korean song Arirang during a press conference in Yerevan. He offered his early impressions of the country to attending journalists, comparing it to his native Korea.

One of KIM’s next stops on the festival circuit will be the Venice Film Festival again (he also attended last year with Out of Competition title Moebius) to support his most recent film One on One which will debut a new cut as the opening film of the festival’s Venice Days section. The ongoing 11th edition of the Yerevan International Film Festival will conclude on Sunday, July 20th.
