  • György Pálfi Takes Best Director and Special Jury Prize for FREE FALL

    Free Fall
, one of this year’s feature-length projects from the Jeonju International Film Festival, picked up the Best Director and Special Jury Prize (worth USD 15,000) from the 49th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in the Czech Republic. The event’s top prize went to the Georgian film Corn Island, from director George Ovashvili.

Every year, JIFF commissions mid-length works from world-renowned auteurs, and releases its Jeonju Digital Project omnibus. However, in 2014 the project was expanded to support three feature length projects. Two of those, The Avian Kind and Alive, were from the local filmmakers SHIN Yeon-shick and PARK Jung-bum, while the third was a Hungary-France- South Korea co-production from Hungarian filmmaker György Pálfi.

Free Fall follows an elderly woman who jumps to her death off an apartment block only to fail to meet her demise. She picks up her glasses and makes her way back up through the building, encountering bizarre stories on her journey.

Pálfi broke out onto the international scene with Taxidermia in 2006 but of late has had trouble securing finances for his new projects. During JIFF this year, he credited the festival with affording him the opportunity to realize his vision. Jeonju provided 20% of the project’s USD 500,000 budget.

Also screening at Karlvoy Vary this year were the world premiere of Jiseul (2012) director O Muel’s new work Golden Chariot in the Sky and Bong Joon Ho’s sci-fi blockbuster Snowpiercer. The prestigious festival ran from July 4th to 12th.
