The first win for a Korean animated film
Filmmaker JOUNG Yu-mi became the first Korean filmmaker to win the Grand Prize at the 24th World Festival of Animated Film in Zagreb which closed on June 7th.
The World Festival of Animated Film in Zagreb is the second oldest animated film festival and one of the 4 major animated film festivals which include Japan’s Hiroshima, Canada’s Ottawa and France’s Annecy.
Love Games follows the course of love between two immature adults using the metaphor of childhood plays. Korean animated films have been invited to the World Festival of Animated Film in Zagreb since 2000, but JOUNG Yu-mi’s Love Games is the first Korean film to receive the Grand Prize.
Love Games was written and directed by the filmmaker with the short animation film support from the Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA). Love Games was screened at the Berlin Film Festival’s ‘Berlinale Shorts’ section, the International Women’s Film Festival in Seoul (IWFFIS) and the Yubari International Fantastic Film Festival, and won Grand Prizes at the Holland Animation Film Festival’s short film section in the Netherlands.
Born in Busan in 1981, filmmaker JOUNG Yu-mi studied painting at Kookmin University and animated films at the Korean Film Academy of Film Arts (KAFA). She made her debut as a filmmaker in 2004 with Paranoid Kid.
