SEOL Kyung-gu, LEE Jung-jae, and PARK Joong-hoon to be awarded
The New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF), organized by Subway Cinema, will be holding its 13th year from June 27 to July 14th at Film Society of Lincoln Center, Japan Society, and Asia Society. It will be a big year for Korean films with awards to be presented to Korean actors and also by closing off the festival with a Korean title.
The opening night film is Alan Mak and Felix Chong’s Overheard 3 which is a crime thriller starring Sean Lau, Louis Koo, Daniel Wu and Zhou Xun. The Hong-Kong Chinese film is the 3rd edition of the Overheard franchise, but the characters will be in different roles and will tell a new story. Following this exciting opening, the festival has programmed 60 features, of which 12 features are Korean titles, along with one Korean shorts programming consisting of 7 films from Mise-en-scene Short Festival.
The International premiere of PARK Chan-kyong's docu-drama Manshin: Ten Thousand Spirits is the closing night film, which is about the life of KIM Geum-hwa, a famous shaman who had an oppressive life as a possessed individual and grew up through various historical changes in Korea. Manshin: Ten Thousand Spirits opened the DMZ Korean International Documentary Film Festival last year and stars KIM Sae-ron, RYU Hyun-kyung and MOON So-ri. MOON will be in attendance for the screening.
Aforementioned recognitions of Korean stars from NYAFF are the Festival’s Star Asia Award for SEOL Kyung-gu, the subject of ‘Korean Actor in Focus’ LEE Jung-jae, and The Celebrity Award for PARK Joong-hoon.
Other Korean guests include director SHIN Yeon-shick who will attend with his film Rough Play and director LEE Su-jin with HAN Gong-ju. NYAFF’s selections are sure to present a variety from Korea through older titles like Il Mare (2000) to the more recent The Terror, LIVE (2013).
