  • New X-MEN Sets Fox Record at Korean Box Office
  • by Pierce Conran /  May 26, 2014
  • 1.45 Million Viewers Over Weekend

X-Men: Days of Future Past, the seventh title in long-standing Marvel mutant franchise, opened in grand fashion around the world this past weekend. Its bow in Korea was particularly impressive, setting a new market benchmark for Hollywood studio 20th Century Fox with a 1.45 million admissions haul for the three-day frame, which represented 64% of the marketplace.

The previous weekend record holder for Fox was Avatar, which bowed with 1.39 million in 2009. The overall record holder remains Transformers: Dark of the Moon, with its 2.37 million admissions debut back in the summer of 2011. X-Men’s success came at the expense of both local and foreign holdovers, but particularly the blockbuster Godzilla, which saw its take slide over 82%, down to 77,265 viewers and fifth place for its second weekend frame.

Last week’s chart-topper, the Korean erotic drama Obsessed, slowed 48% for another 231,510 admissions, bringing its 12-day total to 1.14 million admissions. In third place was local action-thriller The Target, with another 116,079. The film, which has brought in 2.78 million spectators to date, also screened at the Cannes Film Festival over the weekend.

Among new films, July JUNG’s A Girl at My Door, also a Cannes title, debuted with 55,868 viewers in 310 locations while Spike Jonze’s Her kicked off with 46,818 in just 167 theaters.
