  • SNOWPIERCER Powers to No. 2 at Chinese BO
  • by Pierce Conran /  Mar 20, 2014
  • Highest Opening for Bong Joon Ho Film Outside of Korea

Bong Joon Ho’s sci-fi blockbuster Snowpiercer opened in China on Monday (March 17th) at second place behind current Hollywood chart topper Need for Speed. The film secured a 22% market share worth RMB 6.52 million (USD 1.05 million). The opening is higher than its French bow, where it brought in 200,000 spectators over five days, but below its domestic opening day haul of KRW 4.15 billion (USD 3.88 million).

The CJ Entertainment film’s Chinese debut is below that of Showbox’s Mr. Go last summer, a film that was partly funded by Chinese outfit Huyai Brothers, but ahead of the heist hit The Thieves, which featured sequences set in Macao. Snowpiercer was sold to the China Film Group Corporation for a flat fee. The Chinese cut of the film is said to be missing one minute of footage, reportedly cut out of violent sequences.

Bong’s film, which attracted over 9.3 million viewers in Korea last summer, will be competing in several categories at this year’s Asian Film Awards in Macao next week. Snowpiercer, which is slowly rolling out in multiple international territories, will be released by The Weinstein Company in North America this coming June.
