Selected for Golden Horse Fantastic and Imagine
The latest film from maverick filmmaker KIM Ki-duk, the controversial
Moebius, has added a pair of dates to its festival calendar. Following its premiere out of competition at last year’s Venice International Film Festival, the film is now set to screen at the Golden Horse Fantastic Film Festival in Taipei and the Imagine Film Festival in Amsterdam.
Forgoing the use of dialogue, Moebius is a dark and literal spin on the oedipal myth which follows a teenager who is castrated by his mother when she fails to emasculate her husband after discovering his infidelity. The film stars CHO Jae-hyun, SEO Young-joo and LEE Eun-woo.
Due to its controversial and graphic content, the film was initially slapped with a restricted rating by the Korea Media Ratings Board before eventually being granted a teenager-restricted release on its third review, following some cuts. The film was screened uncut at Venice but has since only been screened in its edited version.
Moebius has already been invited to 15 events, including the Toronto, Busan, Brisbane and Stockholm International Film Festivals. KIM is now working on a new film called One on One, starring MA Dong-seok, which will go through a quick production before being submitted to this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
The 5th Golden Horse Fantastic Film Festiva will run over April 4-17 while the 30th Imagine Film Festival will take place from April 9-18. Moebius is the only Korean feature screening at both events this year.
