Modern Korean Films to Screen Throughout April
The Philadelphia Museum of Art is set to screen a series of Korean films in its Van Pelt Auditorium on Wednesdays throughout April. The showcase, which will include modern classics such as IM Kwon-taek’s Chihwaseon (2002), is supported by the Dean and Zoë Pappas Family Foundation.
The showcase will feature a mix of contemporary films, documentaries and contemporary classics, and will showcase traditional and modern Korean culture through themes explored in the concurrent Treasures from Korea: Arts and Culture of the Joseon Dynasty, 1392-1910 exhibition being held at the museum. Each film in the showcase will receive an introduction by Joe KIM, the founder of the Philadelphia Asian American Film Festival. Most screenings will also be followed by discussions with experts in Korean film and history.
Following IM’s Chihwaseon, which stars CHOI Min-sik, other Korean films that will screen in Philadelphia include KANG Hyoung-chul’s popular comedy drama Sunny, which attracted over seven million Korean spectators in 2011, KIM Ki-duk’s Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter and Spring (2003), Planet B-Boy (2008), from Korean-American filmmaker Benson LEE, and NA Hong-jin thriller The Yellow Sea (2010).
