  • Kino Lorber Takes Charge of Tartan’s Asian Genre Collection

Many modern Korean classics were first introduced to English viewers by Tartan Films through their genre label ‘Asia Extreme.’ Film lovers will once again be able to discover their catalogue as distribution rights to the 90-strong collection have now been acquired from Palisades Tartan by Kino Lorber. The deal spans U.S. home entertainment rights including packaged media, digital and repertory theatrical rights. Canadian rights for some titles are also included.

Certain titles will be granted theatrical releases while others will be issued on Blu-ray with the Palisades Tartan name. Kin Lorber has expressed intent to digitally release the titles as many of them have not been afforded much exposure in new media. Kino Lorber stated that “We are exultant to be able to bring the gems of the Palisades Tartan library back to market on all home entertainment physical and digital platforms. It’s why we exist as a company—these films define our mission.”

Asia Extreme was a popular sub-label of Tartan Films that presented genre films from Far East and Southeast Asia before the firm declared bankruptcy in 2008. Among the many Korean films introduced on the label were PARK Chan-wook’s Oldboy (2003), KIM Jee-woon’s A Tale of Two Sisters (2003) and JANG Joon-hwan’s Save the Green Planet (2003).
