  • Korean-Produced Animation THE NUT JOB Opens Strong in US
  • by Pierce Conran /  Jan 22, 2014
  • Grosses USD 25 Million Over Martin Luther King Weekend

The new 3D animation The Nut Job, which was co-produced by Korean outfit Red Rover and Canadian company ToonBox Entertainment, scored a strong debut during its North American debut over the past four-day holiday weekend. The film recorded a stronger than expected third place finish, behind new Hollywood comedy Ride Along and the second wide release weekend of Afghanistan-set war film Lone Survivor.

From 3,427 North American theaters, The Nut Job generated USD 19.41 million over the Friday to Sunday frame and garnered USD 25.26 million over the entire four-day Marther Luther King holiday weekend. The film was able to capitalize on the lack of strong family fare since Disney’s hit Frozen opened two months ago. With no competition in sight for a few weeks, until The Lego Movie opens in early February, the animation is expected to draw in more family crowds over the coming weekends.

In The Nut Job, Seolli the squirrel and his friends raid a store in downtown to stock up on a supply of nuts to get through the winter. Global Korean music sensation Psy appears as an animated version of himself in the animation. The KRW 45 billion (USD 42.8 million) film received partial direct and indirect support from the Korean government and loans from domestic banks. The Nut Job is set to open in Korea on January 29th.
