Korean films are expanding their scope after scoring a slew of presales deals in overseas markets. The Nut Job, a collaboration with Canada and the U.S., is confirmed for release on over 3,000 theatres throughout North America and was sold to 120 nations at the American Film Market in November.

Director Peter Lepeniotis, who previously made the TV animation Bolts & Blip (2010), and scriptwriter Lorne Cameron of Ratatouille (2007) collaborated on The Nut Job, which was co-produced by Redrover Co. Ltd., a Korean studio specializing in 3D productions, and the Canadian animation studio Toon Box Entertainment. Liam Neeson, Will Arnett, Katherine Heigl, Brendan Fraser and other Hollywood superstars voiced the characters for the film. KRW 45 billion (USD 42.77 million) was allocated for this adventure story of a squirrel named Surly and his friends who are raiding a store to steal peanuts needed to get through the winter. It will open on January 17th in the U.S. and is set to be distributed in North America through Open Road Films, while The Weinstein Company, the distributor of Snowpiercer for English-speaking countries, will oversee other markets outside of the U.S.

The romantic comedy Steal My Heart, starring JOO Won and KIM A-Joong, succeeded in signing presale contracts with seven countries. According to an official from the overseas team from Lotte Shopping Lotte Entertainment Co., Ltd., “Asian buyers were very interested (in our film) due to the casting of KIM A-Joong, who gained a lot of recognition through 200 Pounds Beauty (2006), and JOO Won, a Korean-wave star from TV dramas including King of Baking, Kim Tak-Goo and Good Doctor.” Following sales agreements from AFM to Taiwan and Mongolia, Steal My Heart recently scored deals with Japan, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia. The film was released in Korea on December 18th.
