The NUT JOB Will Be Released on January 17, 2014
A new Korean 3D animation will open at 3,000 theaters in North America next month, making it the largest release ever for a Korean movie. The Nut Job is set to open on January 17th, 2014, through Open Road Films, a major US movie distributor, following four years of co-production with Canada.
The KRW 45 billion (USD 42.8 million) movie depicts the adventure of Seolli the squirrel and his friends who raid a store in a downtown area to steal peanuts needed to get through the winter. The film features a scene in which the main characters sing and dance to 'Gangnam Style' together with an animated version of singer Psy.
The production cost of this animated feature was partially covered through direct and indirect support from the Korean government and loans from two local banks. With the North American release of The Nut Job, the Korean government plans to increase its support for the country’s animation industry, allocating KRW 22.4 billion from its 2014 budget, an increase from this year’s KRW 17.2 billion.
The Nut Job will be released in Korea on January 29th, 2014.
