Nominated in 6 Other Categories
BONG Joon-ho’s Snowpiercer won an award for Best Art Direction during Sunday night’s 56th Asia-Pacific Film Festival Awards show, held in Macau. The big award winner during the night was KOREEDA Hirokazu’s Like Father Like Son, which picked up prizes for Best Film and Best Director. Acting awards went The Grandmaster’s ZHANG Ziyi and Stray Dogs’ LEE Kang-shen.
Snowpiercer’s distinction was earned by art director Ondrej Nekvasil. Nekvasil previously picked up the same prize for his work on the film from the Grand Bell (Daejong) and Blue Dragon Film Awards in Korea. The category was one of seven that the ambitious sci-fi was nominated in. The other selections were for Best Director, Supporting Actress (Tilda Swinton), Supporting Actor (SONG Kang-ho), Cinematography (HONG Kyung-pyo), Editing (Steve M. CHOE and KIM Chang-ju) and Sound design (CHOI Tae-young).
The film has already won a number of awards on its native soil, primarily for Best Film, Director and Cinematography at the Korean Film Critics Association Awards and Best Director at the Blue Dragon Film Awards. During its run in late summer the film accumulated over 9.3 million admissions at the local box office.
Having sold to 167 markets, Snowpiercer will be screened in theaters worldwide. To date it has already opened in France and Hong Kong, while it will bow in Japan in January.
