  • Korean Films Top 100 Million Admissions for Second Straight Year
  • by Pierce Conran /  Oct 07, 2013
  • Figure Reached in Record Time

For the second straight year, the Korean film industry has crossed the 100 million admissions mark for local films. The milestone was eclipsed on October 4th, well ahead of last year’s pace, when the figure was reached on November 20th. 2012’s total admissions figure for Korean films came in at 114 million, a number that is expected to be surpassed before the end of this year.

While a few blockbusters, such as BONG Joon-ho’s Snowpiercer and HAN Jae-rim’s The Face Reader, have played a large role in the domestic industry’s strength this year, a wide variety of genre pictures have drawn in large crowds, making the top performers list a little larger and more varied than years prior. These have included the thrillers The Berlin File, Hide and Seek, Cold Eyes and The Terror, LIVE, as well as other genre offerings such as North Korea-themed Secretly Greatly and the prison melodrama Miracle in Cell No. 7.

Up until October 6th, the overall admissions figure was 169 million, with Korean films accounting for 59.9% of that total. Things don’t seem to slowing as Hope, Tough as Iron and The Face Reader are currently leading the way, having combined for a 69% market this past weekend.
