  • BIFF Sets New Currents Jury
  • by Pierce Conran /  Aug 30, 2013
  • Will be Led by Iranian Filmmaker Rakshan Bani-Etemad

New Currents, the main competition section of the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), has selected its jury for this year’s 18th edition of BIFF. The New Currents competition is reserved for the first or second features from Asian filmmakers. The five-member jury will select two entries during the festival, each of which will be awarded USD 30,000.

Leading this year’s jury will be Iranian Filmmaker Rakshan Bani-Etemad. As Iran’s representative female director, Bani-Etemad has found acclaim through her works such as Nargess (1991) and The Blue Veiled (1995). Joining her will be Charles Tesson, who will also be presented with this year’s Korean Cinema Award at BIFF as recognition for his work to further the reputation and prospects of Korean cinema overseas. Tesson is the artistic director of the Cannes Film Festival’s International Critics' Week.

Variety chief film critic Scott Foundas will join the pair on jury duty, along with acclaimed Japanese filmmaker AOYAMA Shinji, the force behind such works as Eureka (2000) and Tokyo Park (2011). Filling out the jury will be local heavyweight CHUNG Ji-young, a politically inclined veteran director who recently made a comeback with Unbowed (2011) and National Security.

This year’s Busan International Film Festival will take place from October 3rd until the 12th.
