  • KIM Ki-duk’s Latest Cleared by KMRB
     
    Following its third trip to the Korea Media Ratings Board (KMRB), KIM Ki-duk’s highly controversial new feature Moebius has been approved for release in the country with a teenager restricted rating.
     
    When first submitted to the board the film received a restricted rating due to its extreme content, which features incest and self-castration. Due to the lack of specialty theaters in the country, in which films with a restricted rating can screen, the classification was tantamount to a ban on general release. KIM then resubmitted the film after having shaved off some 100 seconds from 20 scenes only to once again receive the same rating.
     
    A further 50 seconds were removed from the work but the auteur opted to screen his film to an invited group of journalists at the Korean Film Council (KOFIC) first, to gauge their opinion on the film. 87% of the assembled guests felt the film should be released. On its third session of review, KIM’s 18th film was approved for release with a teenager restricted rating, which will prevent anyone under the age of 18 from seeing the feature.
