KOFIC Night and Korean Showcase Impress
The Moscow International Film Festival recently wound its 35th edition to a close. The Korean-heavy event, featuring a special Korean film showcase and the participation of the Korean Film Council (KOFIC), ended on June 29th, but not before handing out a big prize to the sole Korean film in international competition.
Following a shared CGV Movie Collage award with Dear Dolphin after their premieres during this year’s Jeonju International Film Festival, Lebanon Emotion picked up the Best Director prize for its young neophyte helmer JUNG Young-heon.
Set against an austere snow-swept backdrop, the film follows a young man who takes a break in the countryside and woman, just out of jail, trying to escape the clutches of a violent man.
Far be it from being the first Korean film to scoop a major prize at the Russian fest, Lebanon Emotion’s win marks the tenth anniversary of JANG Joon-hwan’s Best Director triumph with Save the Green Planet during the festival’s 25th edition. Other major Korean winners over the years include KANG Soo-yeon’s Best Actress win for IM Kwon-taek’s Come Come Come Upward (1989) and LEE Deok-hwa’s Best Actor accolodae for 1993’s I Will Survive.
In addition to JUNG’s debut, a comprehensive Korean showcase of recent Korean cinema was also held. The sidebar featured Juvenile Offender, Nobody's Daughter Haewon, New World, A Werewolf Boy, Jury, The Thieves, Horror Stories, Azooma and Jiseul. In addition, Busan International Film Festival Honorary Director KIM Dong-ho served on the festival’s jury.
The Korean Film Council was also on hand for the Korean cinema celebration as representatives from KOFIC visited the event and staged a special evening which was attended by filmmakers, international festival delegates and various diplomats.
