  • 11 Korean Films Invade Taipei
  • by Pierce Conran /  Jun 25, 2013
  • Gala Premiere for THE WINTER OF THE YEAR WAS WARM

Korean cinema will be on display in a big way during the 15th edition of the Taipei Film Festival (TFF), which gets underway this Friday (June 28th) and continues all the way until July 20th. 11 films from the Korean peninsula, including 10 features and a short, will be seen across a number of the festival’s sections.

Most prominent on this year’s program will be David CHO’s The Winter of the Year Was Warm, which was warmly received during last October’s Busan International Film Festival. The romantic film, starring KIM Tae-woo and YE Ji-won, will be one of TIF’s Gala Premieres this year, alongside a number of Taiwanese films which will be screened for the very first time.

The bulkiest program of the fest is the Panorama section, which is broken down further into a number of categories, a number of them featuring Korean works. HONG Sangsoo’s most recent film Nobody’s Daughter Haewon, one of this year’s Berlinale competition titles, will be featured in the ‘Auteur Selection’. The ‘Viva La Cinema’ section will feature E J-yong’s latest mockumentary Behind the Camera, which features the director playing himself, and Jury, the debut short of KIM Dong-ho, the founder and honorary director of the Busan International Film Festival.

Among the ‘Window on Asian Cinema’ selections are: the prison melodrama Miracle in Cell No. 7, which recently attracted over 12 million spectators at home; the sci-fi omnibus Doomsday Book from celebrated genre filmmakers KIM Jee-woon and IM Pil-sung; PARK Hee-gon’s based on a truestory baseball drama Perfect Game; and LEESONG Hee-il’s queer-themed One Night and Two Days, which features his recent feature White Night as well as his two mid-length films Suddenly Last Summer and Going South.

Also on this year’s Taipei program is a retrospective of the work of Japanese actress and producer Kiki SUGINO which, among others, will feature three works that were co-produced by Korea and Japan. Magic and Loss, from director LIM Kai-hai, premiered at Busan back in 2010, while LIM Tai-hung’s Two Rabbits in Osaka was originally a project at NAFF, the market arm of the Pucheon International Fantastic Film Festival. LIM Tai-hung’s Jury, Kiki par Kiki, a mockumentary set during the Jeonju International Film Festival, will also be part of the program.
