KIM Ki-duk’s new film Moebius, previously rated as inappropriate for screening and restricted to specialty theaters by the Korea Media Rating Board, will be re-evaluated. KIM Soon-mo, a producer of the KIM KI-DUK film, said on June 11th, “We will ask for a re-evaluation of Moebius.” Following an earlier evaluation, the Korea Media Rating Board rated Moebius to limited screenings because the film includes content that is detrimental to youth and against ethical and social codes, such as intercourse between a mother and son. There is no theater in Korea to screen films rated limited, so it means it cannot screen unless it is successfully re-evaluated.
 

Producer KIM Soon-mo revealed the full text of the letter of opinion sent by director KIM Ki-duk to the chairman of Korea Media Rating Board on June 5th. In the letter, KIM Ki-duk said, “We live in a world where a number of events and agonies arise due to sex and desire. I wanted to explore the identity of such phenomenon in the film.” He also said, “Moebius is a story where jealousy and the hatred of a husband and wife are transferred to their son and, in the end, they feel guilt and grief to finally give up their joys and desires.” He then said, “My film is a question I always ask society, not the result of my own judgement.”

 
“I think the board rated my film as restricted mainly because intercourse appears between a mother and son”, said KIM Ki-duk, “But if you take a closer look at the story, the sexual relationship between the father and mother is much more meaningful than the intercourse between the mother and her son.” He continued, “If you look carefully at the overall drama of the film, it will definitely feel different. It is the device that passes through the theme of the film and it was an inevitable choice for me as a director.”

 
Lastly, he said, “Unless the rating changes, I will pay the actors and staff for their effort with my own money and forget about screening in Korea. If they recognize at least a little of the value of my previous 18 films, they will let mature people consider my film.”

 
Producer KIM Soon-mo said, “After KIM Ki-duk sent the letter of opinion, the chairman of the Korea Media Rating Board sent us a reply saying we will be given a second chance.” Moebius is a film about a family destroyed as they are obsessed with sexual desire. CHO Jae-hyun, SEO Young-joo and LEE Eun-woo appear in the feature.
