  • First Time for Independent Films to be Screened All Year Round

Korean director KIM Ki-duk and his film persona CHO Jae-hyun have come together for the future of diversity in film. Director KIM and the director of the Gyeonggi Film Commission CHO will sign an MOU on April 11th at Suwon's Megabox Youngtong at a ceremony for the opening of a cinema for diverse films which will be attended by KIM Moon-su, mayor of Gyeonggi Province and the CEO of Megabox, YEO Hwan-ju.
Under the slogan, "A Diverse Film World Created by Gyeonggi Province and Megabox", the event is part of the province's cultural policy to promote and support diversity in film. The cinema will be the first in the country to screen Korean films representing diversity.

Director KIM has raised the issue of a weak distribution system in Korea for independent films where blockbusters dominate multiplexes. Director KIM will take part in the MOU in his capacity as the head of a film production company which produces independent films.

After the MOU signing ceremony, director LEE Ji-seung's Azooma will be screened as the first film to get support from the diversity film program. The film was produced with a budget of 50 million won. At the screening and ceremony, director KIM Dong-won, considered to be the godfather of Korean independent documentaries, director JEON Kyu-hwan of The Weight as well as director YANG Ik-june of Breathless will take part. The theater will also screen Jiseul by Korean director O Muel on four screens three times a day. The film has so far pulled in over 70 thousand viewers.
