  • Inaugural Meeting for the Directors Guild of Korea Takes Place
  • by LEE Eun-sun  /  Mar 29, 2013
  • LEE Jun-ik Appointed First Representative

The Directors Guild of Korea, founded cooperatively by 300 directors actively working in the Korean film industry, is going to have its official inaugural meeting on April 1st. Founded in 2005, the guild received approval as a corporation from Seoul and elected LEE Joon-ik, who directed King And the Clown, to be the first representative this year as it aims for a new beginning.

The membership is composed of almost all the active directors in the Korean film industry including senior directors such as CHUNG Ji-young and KIM Yoo-jin, current hitmakers like PARK Chan-wook, KIM Jee-woon, BONG Joon-ho, RYOO Seung-wan, CHOI Dong-hoon, BYUN Young-joo, KIM Dai-seung, MIN Kyu-dong and KIM Yong-hwa and new directors such as JO Sung-hee and PARK Jung-bum. The guild is sure to become the representative organization for Korean film directors.

At the meeting, after the representative LEE makes an announcement about establishment of the guild, various people including the director IM Kwon-taek, the honorary director of the Busan International Film Festival KIM Dong-ho, the representative of the Korean Film Actor’s Association AHN Sung-ki and the chairman of the Cineastes’ Council LEE Choon-yeon, will deliver congratulatory addresses. Most importantly, they will announce the first draft of the ‘Standard Contract for Directors’ which the Korean Film Council has invested years of efforts into by conducting a lot of research.

“By implementing the ‘Standard Contract for Directors’, we will do the best to foster a reasonable system for film production.” said a representative of the guild, “After it sets a good example, we will work hard on making sound contract forms for script writers and other staff personnel.”

Meanwhile, they are planning to speak on behalf of the subject of film making concerning things such as staff and actors and keep good relationships with the capital. The opinions of directors will be collected and passed to the industry through the guild and vice versa.
