  • Special Prize Awarded to CHEONG in Berlinale
  • by Pierce Conran /  Feb 17, 2013
  • Generation Kplus Section Honors Short Film

Hot on the wheels of Pluto’s win on Friday night in the Generations 14plus section, the short film Cheong by KIM Jung-in has picked up the Special Prize from the Generation KpLus section of the 63rd Berlin International Film Festival. The Latvian film Mammu, es Tevi mīlu by Jānis Nords was awarded the Grand Prix.

Cheong, which tells the story of a young girl who spends a day with her blind father, was one of ten Korean films on show at this year’s Berlinale. The International Jury for the best short film of the Generation Kplus section awarded KIM’s film the Special Prize, which came with an award from the Deutsches Kinderhilfswerk worth €2,500.

The jury mentioned that: “In order to gain acceptance one needs to learn to accept others. When a girl gives up one of her senses, she enters a new world – the one of her father. And although she cannot see it through his eyes, it is rich and satisfying. A very enjoyable and subtle impression about a life of blind people and their loved ones.”

Cheong was one of three Korean shorts in the Berlinale lineup this year, along with JOUNG Yumi’s Love Games and KIM Dong-ho’s Jury.
