First Case of Collaborative Investment for an Animation in China
The Korean animation
Pororo, The Racing Adventure will be released on 6,000 screens all over China. According to a representative of
CJ Entertainment in charge on investment and distribution of the film,
Pororo, The Racing Adventure is going to be released on January 25th through the Chinese major distribution company China Film.
This will eclipse the release of
Leafie, a Hen Into the Wild, which showed on 3,000 screens in 2011 and DreamWorks’
Kung Fu Panda 2, which had fewer than 5,000 screens. A representative of CJ Entertainment said that the number of screens for the release of
Pororo, The Racing Adventure is the largest among all foreign animations to ever be presented in China.
Pororo, The Racing Adventure was produced to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the birth of Pororo the penguin. To make this 3D animation, filmmakers spent 3 years and invested KRW 8 billion (USD 7.56 million). Considering the fact that foreign animations are rarely invited to China, they produced it as a Korean-Chinese collaboration by drawing 30% of the total production cost from AGG, a Chinese government-affiliated investment enterprise. Pororo, The Racing Adventure marks the first time that the Chinese government has invested in a foreign animation.
