  • Discussion on Korean Cinema's Image for the Next 10 Years
  • by JI Yong-jin /  Nov 12, 2012
  • Need for change from platform to contents-oriented policy

On November 8th, a conference was held at CGV Yoido on the future of Korean film image with the theme of ‘Discussion on Korean Cinema's Image for the Next 10 Years'. This event, co-hosted by the Korean Film Production Association, the Producers Guild of Korea, the Korean Association of Film Art and Industry, the Association of Korean Independent Film & Video, the Federation of Korean Movie Worker's Union and sponsored by the Corea Drama Production Association, announced policies looking forward to changes in the media contents industry.

At the conference, CHO Jung-jun from the Producers Guild of Korea announced plans for a policy to develop Korea as a hub for Asian media culture and industry and to expand the concept of film image in light of the growth of domestic demand and advances in foreign markets. As different types of media are blending more and more frequently these days, he believes that we need to move on from the current perspective, where traditionally movie show in theaters and drama are broadcast on TV, and should consider all movies and dramas as media contents with variable platform potential.

LIM Seung-bin, a professor of administrative science at Myung Ji University made the second announcement, as he called for the reorganization of the governance system. For this to happen, a Film and Image council has to be founded, through which more support for the development of media contents and production and distributor improvements coould be developed.

Experts are saying that, although with two films that have scored more than 10 million admissions at the box office and the number of movigoers hitting its peak, there lies more problems ahead. The participants expected the conference to be the first stepping stone for constructing the right policy to solve these problems and to develop balanced growth for the future.
